Hello:

I have an engine oil leak from the right front of the engine and at
some point I would like to fix it.

What are the precautions, mistakes to avoid?

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you,
Arv.

Why not get an aerosol of engine cleaner, spray it over the side where you think that it is leaking, and just use a kettle or jug to rinse off, then you can see if the leak is the rocker cover or head gasket or maybe timing cover. then better advice can be given.

The problem with leaks is that the fan blows it back away from the actual leak

depends on the years for your C class, but they all do it, MB revised the head gasket to stop the problem.
To fix it means head off, head skim, MB head gasket.

Thank you both. As it happens, just 3 weeks ago, I have washed the
engine compartment thoroughly with the engine degreaser and then
hosed it down with water. So it is nice and clean. I will take a closer
look to see where the leak is coming from exactly and let you know
so you can give me advice.

Thank you again,
Arv.

i have the same prob on a C220,

slight leak from the head gasget, so slight that not a drop of oil is ever seen on the place where i park it, however over a year of no cleaning it shows up on the underside of the engine and thats where the MOT nutters complain. I just spray wash the underside before the test and I get the all clear, car works fine too, and I don't want or need to spend the money to fix that small leak.

of course, if others here think that I should, then please tell

cheers

The oil from the leak is eating away the engine tray which is made
of fibre glass so I see the hole in the tray getting bigger and bigger
each time I remove it to change oil. Interesting side effect besides
having to put it oil to maintain the level. Also, all the leaked oil
splashes onto the torque converter and the auto tranny pan. Also,
sometimes it smells of oil in the passenger compartment on hotter days.
