Oh yes, i forgot! The switch to operate the aircon sometimes goes off by itself after the a/con is activated. sometimes whilst driving, when the switch a/con switch is activated (On position), nothing happens. I find that I have to switch the vehicle off, and then restart, which solves the problem. It's almost as if the ignition needs to re-set the switch. Is the a/con switch faulty or something else perhaps?

Sounds like a dodgy relay. If you can find the relay that switches the a/c compressor try switching the a/c as you describe (with no response) then tapping the relay. Then try (the slightly more scientific option) of cleaning the contacts.
