After going for a test drive in a V reg C280 tonight that seemingly had a new battery in the summer while driving after about 3 mile's the radio cut out, completely dead!

The salesman (yes it's a "stealer") said "oh dont worry if you take I'll put another new one in"...I said but even driving just a few miles it should still take a charge allbeit small, and should start off the key.....but it didn't.

Is this a classic case of the alt not charging?

Iv'e never had just a radio go dead while driving because of a battery not charging is this right?

Strange this one, As the car runs from the altenater once started. other things stop when the voltabge drops below 11.7 volt. if the alternater was not putting anything out the car would not have run.
Could be just a classic case of battery failure.and this happens more in the very cold weather

Yea I'm gona phone him again sometime tomorrow and say to check the alt's power, but you say said too it is strange eg the radio going dead.

I'm not saying the battery isn't duff even if it was only (well so I was told!!) bought in the summer, mind it probably didnt help that he put the leads on the wrong way wrong to start with!!....and they supposidly know about the cars they sell...!!!

Hi

I know my car is much older on a '90 plate but my 190E has a resistor, or capacitor (Can never remember which it is) which is part of the charging system. When this went on a long motorway journey we ground to a halt form 70 mph, the entire car went dead, dash lights, even hazards. The whole car lost all battery power so we RAC'd it home. Got the Mechanic out next day and it took him 5 minutes and cost £2 for the part, there was even nothing wrong with the battery.
Obviously you have a different car but the fault may be the same and it's no big deal if it is.
If the alternator is at fault, a quick test with a meter will show it and likewise, the battery can be tested very easily.
If it's the car you want, i would not be out off by this.

Hope that helps

Dad190..........

Yea this is a car we both like very much but dont like the salesman going about thing's, I'm going to go and see him shortly (as he's just 5 mins away) and ask if he can check the alt's power eg 12.8-13.+ and if it's not then he'll know himself then he's got a duff alt on his hands and will have to repaired if he wants a sale!

TV.............

Yea I know what you say about new duff batteries and it happens, but it's this thing of the radio going completely dead while driving, and I still all the light's, heater ect on, no other light's went off and the car still drove ok no hiccups in spark ect.

like I say above.....I'll ask him to check the alt with a maultimeter and take it from that, I know it's "cheap" because of the mile's but we cant have paying over 5k and it not even starting, thats just not on.

Sorry, all the rest works OK if the radio went dead, if the cigar lighter and glove box light works when the radio is dead, then it is the radio itself at fault
could be the power plug on the back not quite home.
