Hi,

I've just bought my first Mercedes, a '98 C280 Sport (if you hadn't guessed!). It's a wonderful car but I have spotted a problem with the engine.

There is an oil leak from the front drivers side of the engine, above one of the cylinders. It appears to be right at the top of the engine near some nut and bolt. I was wondering if anyone else had had a similar problem? I have a cast-iron warranty so I'm not too concerned, but I would rather it didn't nuke the engine over the next few days as I need the car.

Sorry for the poor technical description but I am not at all experienced with engines, probably why I bought a car with this problem in the first place!

Thanks in advance.

Is it a straight 6 engine - if so it sounds like your "C seal" gasket has gone..

if it's not a straight 6 then I dunno! :D

c280 oil leak c seal?

also have a c280 sport (1994), with same problem. Any idea how to get to it to replace it? is it within the scope of a reasonably competent home mechanic?

Same problem.....

1999 C280 Sport.......just had repairs completed. Leak was also front of engine, driver's side. Gasket between block and oil filter housing.......$386.00. Another $200.00 for serpentine belt, idler pulley, and belt tensioner.

Be careful, small leak turned into severe leak in a matter of a week or so.

was it the C seal you had changed? Anybody out there know how to change it - i'm pretty sure thats the problem with mine. Its dripping less than a teaspoonful a day, but is making a mess of my nice driveway.

bought the seal from dealer today. i think its refered to as a 'goalpost' due to its shape - still desperate to find out if changing it is within the scope of a reasonable home mechanic? any advice is very much appreciated.
