Have faith

As I am thinking about foolishly replacing my van with the brand new V6 Sprinter, it would help to restore my faith in Mercedes if I could hear Blassberg say he has already clocked up huge miles and has not had a single warranty issue with his V6 bus.

Please,

Please,

go on, Please dish the dirt.

(I really want the V6 Sprinter)

Hi steve with the 316, I also have a 2003 316, what sort of problems you had ? I got a serious rattle in either the clutch or gearbox, or thrust bearing, or mass flywheel, they say the mass flywheel is the worst case scenario !
Rattle goes when I depress clutch pedal, have you or anyone had the gearbox off one of these ? I am told the thrust is a different set up on these and hardly likely to be that. any ideas ? also have a 310 sprinter, better the old one we think !!!!! Will probably take off myself, as merc dealer is arm and a leg job ! Roy

Hi Roy,

There is a full list of the faults on my van in this thread -

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=16705&page=2

My van has the sprintshift gearbox so it is a different set up again (god help me when it starts going wrong out of warranty, it sounded so good in the brochure!) I was talking to my local van hire place when mine was at the dealers for warranty work and he said they too had problems with 2003 sprinters but they seem to be better after that? Merc face lifted the sprinter at the beginning of 2003 and mine was one of the early face lifted ones so I wonder if they moved the production line around at the same time and then had quality problems while things settled down? Is your van out of warranty? (thankfully I have until the beginning of Aug).

Getting back to your fault, does it occasionally rattle when the you are in neutral and the engine is idling then pressing the clutch will shut it up?

If it is doing this then it sounds the same as my landrover. I fitted recon gearboxes and a new clutch(not for that fault) and it sorted it. I think it was the clutch friction plate as the anti-shock springs in the centre of the plate were loose and I suspect that these began 'bouncing' occasionally. Its not too big a job to drop the box out and check this although I haven't had to do this on a sprinter so I am not sure how the manual selector linkages connect up (rods or cables?). While you are in there I am sure it would be worth checking/changing the thrust bearing? I have had my arm up around the bellhousing in the last week or so and there seems to be plenty of room to get at the bolts(a torx type bolt?) or there is on my chassis cab anyway, might be a bit tighter on a panel van.

Alternatively if you have done mega-miles (200k+) it could be the gearbox shafts rattling in a worn bearing but I wouldn't really expect this at lower mileages. Incidentally gearbox oil change is done at 300,000km according to merc!
