I read that as well, don't like what's been done to the car but a lot for the £££

2 things really put me off - 20mpg and the wife driving it!! No brainer - stick with the S204 C220, and worry about the day she first drives the SLK and finds out what happens when you press the loud pedal reasonably hard:eek::eek::eek:

The interior/dash of a pre-facelift w204 is simply awful.

We always though that once we were away from travelling with rug rats (1 now 43 with 4 but thankfully 12000 miles away, the other 36 with 2 rug rats and 120 miles away) we would get away from estate cars - but after a brief sojourn with a Rover 820 Vitesse hatchback we've been back with an estate for decades, and find the S204 so useful for supermarket trips, visiting family etc - but then my wife does not understand "travelling light" so the trip we took in the 968 cab took a lot of organising, and I don't think we could do the same trip in the SLK - and even in the S204 I'd have to limit her on the amount of luggage she could take! Oh the joys of being a married man - and before you say anything Russ, a divorce is not an option!!

Not going to agree with you on that - it's a heck of an improvement on the 203 (I swopped a 2001 S203 for a 2008 pre-facelift S204) and IIRC the facelift introduced the "Ipad bluetacked to the dashboard" screen, which IMHO looks awful!

Chris,

I despise the pop-up Comand screen and it's cover in the pre-facelift W204. Just looks terrible to me.

The facelift W204 had a 'traditional' integrated screen.

I also agree about any Merc that has the screen that looks like it's been stuck on as an afterthought.

David.

I’ve found it’s always an option (unfortunately) :(

Still I’ve a large (not large enough) toy cupboard and some seriously unpractical vehicles :p:D

The key to married bliss is to buy her an SUV, any SUV...after which she can pack all she likes on a trip to her mothers...and as a result we are golden, and can do no wrong, as well as have the freedom to buy whatever car we want as long she still has her SUV all is well in the world...

I know that feeling.
MrsLK has no concept of foreign lands having shops so insists on buying everything here to take to France. I had thought about replacing the 210 by downsizing to an older Model S Tesla but instead we ended up going bigger with an R Class!

Have to say it's very practical though.....

You mean the 6 seater car / van crossover R class? always fancied one of those, they are odd in a perculiar way but intriguing at the same time - what's the youngest one can buy? is it on par in terms of ride & space with a M/GLE, and does it have any off-road (soft off-road) credentials?

They come in 5, 6 or 7 seat variants. Post facelift (2011) they're 5 or 7 seat and were discontinued in 2012 I believe.
In terms of space they are based on a stretched w164 chassis and came in short (4.9m) or long (5.1m) variants. Most post facelift will be the long wheelbase.
Like an ML they are 4wd in all but the 280/300cdi versions but are not off roaders - they simply don't have the ground clearance.
Interior space is cavernous. With all seats folded the load bay is 2.2m (7ft 2) long. They don't have the height of an ML but you can still easily stand a washing machine up right with plenty of space above.
Spec is incredibly variable and it's rare to find 2 the same. For example ours has Panoramic roof (very rare it seems), separate rear air conditioning and heated 2nd row seats. I've never seen another with those options.
Ride is very comfortable and they make a fantastic long distance cruiser with surprisingly little road or wind noise and even in diesel form very little engine noise unless accelerating.
I actually like the styling even though some reviews say it's awkward.

One thing they are not is a town car. Too long to park easily and turning circle can be a challenge.

....
Mine had the pan roof too, but as you say, not many did. No rear a/c or heated seat in the back of mine.

I liked the styling too .... and the rarity of them, you never park next to another in the supermarket car park

That makes three I've seen or heard of with pano roof. I've seen another couple with the rear Aircon but never seen another with rear seat heaters and obviously never seen one with all three. It was a lot of the reason we kept it when we found the DPF issues. The rear Aircon and Pano roof were high on our wishlist.
It's the only car I've seen which after buying have not seen another on the road (not including when I went to see @Craiglxviii the other week).
They do seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo!

Couldn't agree more, it is a nice place to be. 7 years and 60k still good, one of MB's most timeless designs

It is better IMO as you don't have to have it open which is less clutter on the dash and no distractions
