Can anyone tell me whether it's easy to fix squeaky fans which provide the air via the dash vents?

I seem to have a problem which manifests itself in a dry rubbing noise, which is particularly prevalent with the fan on 1 or 2 and when turning corners!

Can I get to it and oil the squeak or do I need to replace?

Help, it's driving me mad!!!!!!!!!!

What car do you have? My Merc starts emiting a high pitched sound inside after about 2 hours driving, when the fan is in position '1'. Changing it to 2, or 3 is fine, but 1 is a useful fan speed!

Only known fix is to thump the dash solidly, or turn off the fan.

Good luck.

My 190e was doing this for a long time. Eventually got to the stage where sometimes the fan wouldn't start unless you turned it up to max. On investigation the motor bearings were seizing up so the fan didn't move freely. Awkward job on a 190e but well worth it. (I think the new fan was about stg80 from EuroCarParts). I think it also explained why the car had an insatiable appetite for alternator brushes too, based on the huge amount of power being sucked up by the seized fan...)

That's interesting, I've just had the alternator brushes replaced on mine

Is replacing the fan somethng I could do myself?

I'm a bit basic on the old mechanics, so haw much do you think it would cost to have it done by a local bod?
