Thanks everyone for replying!

It seems that my mpg is about par for the course with nearly everyone reporting similar figures.

I had the pleasure of driving to work today 120mile round trip (m25 and m3  ) as my 7 year old TD ford escorts starter motor packed up on me this morning.

It was a welcome change from the noisy agricultral noise of the diesel, but 30mpg versus 50 mpg I couldnt afford do it everyday.

maybee I'll trade the escort in for an old 300d who knows!

Cheers everyone for your hints and tips i will give them all a try and let you know how i get on.

to update.. my 230 fuel consumption

400 miles before the reserve light came on, from a full tank, including 2 hours in motorway traffic jams, and 180 miles @ 80mph with A/C on and the rest at 70mph.

I work it out at just under 30mpg..

not bad at all :D
