I am contemplating changing to the new V6 CDI sprinter following a bit of a horror story with my current van.

Have you had any trouble with your C320CDi, either engine or rest of vehicle. It would be nice to know if Mercedes are really climbing out of the poor quality blackhole they have been in in recent years before I part with cash I can't really afford.

Your reply would be much appreciated.

Hi Blassberg

You must be enjoying your new car to the extreme if that is the sort of fuel figures you are getting, I would have expected high 30's or even low 40's in the 'small' C class. To be honest that is a little worrying as fuel consumption is a big factor for a high milage business user as myself. With the previous 311CDI (109hp 4cyl) I averaged about 21.5mpg pulling around the big luton body I use. When I switched to the 316CDI(156hp 5cyl) the consuption dipped slightly by about 1mpg at the most although I must admit I make a concious effort to cruise at a steady 65-70mph (well, some of the time;) ).

Perhaps I would be better going for the top tune 4cyl which now has 150hp and 330Nm of torque (same torque and near as dammit same power as the now dropped 2.7 5cyl). They squeeze a quart out of a pint pot with twin turbos 1 after the other which should give better mpg and a lighter engine (better payload)

BUT, that would be the sensible choice:-(

What milage have you covered in the 'C' ?

I know that you are talking about a 320 but my 220 gives about 32 local and I have seen almost 50 MPG on a run at speed limits.
I'll try and find out what our local Parcel Force driver gets from his sprinter.

When it goes in for service, tell them about the seat, the are two service updates for this, its a matter of applying a special plastic grease to various parts.

yeah - bottom line is why do you want the whizz bang 320CDI - performance or economy. If you dont need / want the performance then the the 220 must be spot on the money. If you just "have" to have the performance then the lower mpg is what you're going to get. Worst case is probably getting the 320 but worrying about the fuel.

there was one problem today. decided to cruise rather than fly down the M5 to Bristol today, 100 and a bit miles. fuel consumption figure had a funny symbol over the leading 2 or 3. Looked a bit like a 4..... In fact it peaked at 43.5 So there - it can be done!

I have tried that experiment too. If I accelerate as if the propshaft is held on with only one nut and dont go any faster than 50mph I can sneak into the low 30's and get over 650 miles out of the 100ltr tank. The down side is that it feels like the longest day of your life.

Alternatively, drive it like I stole it and we get down to 15-16mpg (15.2 is the lowest) and only 330 miles from a tank. I dont like this cos it means I have to fill up at some point on a return trip to London.
