Please oh please can anyone shed any light on this - I have just bought a W124 E320 which rather stupidly i have been telling friends how bomb proof it is:confused: - its only done 31,000 miles and it is pretty much like new. It has suddenly decided to start cutting out mid driving . it just seems to completely shut down no spluttering just a clean cut off. if I then swithch the car off and on its starts perfectly and on I go. Its happened about 4 times so far over a couple of weeks. Any ideas would be very gratefully received. ( Someone has said i might need a new loom ! sounds expensive)

The fuel pump relay is one thing that comes to mind

As malcolm OR

The 'overvoltage protection relay' under the cover behind the battery OR

the crank sensor.

Does it happen only when it gets hot ?

Is it an early 320 (about 1993 say) ?

Do any yellow dash lights stay on ?

I am no expert, but with regard to the loom, I think failures are normally limited to the under bonnet area and can be identified roughly by the visible breakdown of the insulation.

thanks

thanks so much to all your suggestions - it is a late post 1993 car - it does do it when the car has been running for a while not when it is cold and the only light that comes on is the battery light first then shorlty followed by all of them- thanks again charles

I think that when the OVP relay is at fault the only thing affected is the idle, plus the ABS lamp would be on. The MAF should not cause this.

You can bridge the fuel pump relay to make it run all of the time.

I would clean all of the fuses and holders with a non drying switch cleaner

Good advice from Malcolm. AFAIK the main engine ECU is also fed from the OVP along with the idle control and ABS unit. Only other thing that comes to mind is a faulty after market alarm system [ all UK mercedes models of that vintage were dealer fit after market systems] The alarm immobiliser unit normally disables the OVP and fuel pump relays so would mimic either the faults already described above.
