Cam actuator E300 Turbodiesel

Is there a cam actuator on an E300 turbo diesel, 1999? i cant see what i need to unplug to see if it cures the rattle. The rattle seems to be coming from under the manifold towards the rear at around 1000 - 2000 rpm whether moving or stationary.

You havn't got a cam actuator on your car! Not to sure what your rattle could be though! The engine in your car i've found that they do have a funny noise when you come off the throttle is this when you get the noise?

nope. happens on and off throttle whether hot or cold

Have a look at the exhaust heat shield. On the earlier cars there was an exhaust bracket off the gearbox that could resonate as well

im doing the engine mounts tomorrow so will probably have the manifold off. is it safe to start the car when its off?....i would imagine it would be loud when running but maybe might still be able to hear the rattle and pinpoint it better

Newbie E300DT Avantgarde 98 with rattle needs advice

Hi, I'm new to this place, having just got myself my first merc...
It's a E300DT Avantgarde 98 S reg.
I'm just kind of finding my feet... on the whole I'm really pleased with the car.
I was looking for anything relating to the kind of engine rattle you get when you come off the throttle, (the above quote seems to fit the bill).
I wondered if anyone could advise me further:

The rattle occurs warm or cold.... when you come off the throttle you get this sort of clatter or rattle that seems to be internal engine noise.
Help....
It just seems so smooth and wonderful in every other way...
