Any one interested in the CAN BUS system can get some basic info here
I for one have never work with it, but have a little understanding. we are going to find more post on this subject as time passes. I know for many it is boring and many folk would rather talk about their crankshaft, the snag is that no one takes it out anymore and admires it on the kitchen table.
A CAN BUS is a good system for cars as it it robust and imune from from interference, it is a simple two way data system, several checks can be made at the same time. the original concept was to use special plugs and sockets same as EtherNet making testing easy, one good thing is that any failure along the line does not take out the whole system (unlike Digital).
Maybe this is where all good things come to an end, I believe that MB have incoperated it into their own wiring and plugs & etc;this means that you must have dedicated test gear. we had a thread last week where a car stopped, gear lever locks in park and that's it, I did a lot of serching and thought possible SAM module, but it turned out to be a drivers seat problem.
Whats the world coming to when your car does a quick self check and says, hang on buddy you are not going anywhere till your seat is fixed.. MB could not fix it and they gave him a new car. We have a similar thread problem starting with a SL320. so long as you all know what is waiting around the corner. Have a simple read up at
