So,

Was discussing plans to optimise costs on the SL with somebody the other day.

I said I could SORN and de-insure (garage stored) the car for 6 months of Winter. My mate said I can't do just 6 months, and that if I cancel policy after 6 months it is a bad mark.

Surely that can't be the case, can it?

You can cancel any insurance policy when ever you want, but you'll never build up a no claims discount .... not sure bout the 'bad mark' You could always reduce the cover to fire & theft for the time it's in your garage.

Insurance for 6 months is not really a good idea. What happens if the car is stolen or gets damaged.in the garage? Most insurance companies, if they will even do it, will charge as much for 6 months as they would for a year.

The insurance on my SL500 is only £187 for a year, fully comprehensive, 4000 miles pa. I'm with Aviva.

Can I make a recommendation to everyone. Have a look at this website-->
Www.bymiles.co.uk
It's a company that only charges a very cheap parking rate and then a pence per mile rate thereafter. I will be getting my insurance from them when I'm ready.

This is a fantastic service... I have actually been in conversation with the CEO/Co-founder on LinkedIn and I am a massive fan!

Unfortunately I can't use it for any of my cars at the moment.. here is why I think it is:

* Age of car
AND/OR
* Insurance group (All mine are kind of high)

@davidsl500 I will be sure to try that broker. Thanks.

Interesting, however it does require a dongle in the OBD2 port.

I tried it on the Smart and it came out more expensive for 5000 miles than the existing policy for 20k miles pa by about £60.

Trying to understand car insurance does my head in. My sl600 vdoz 500 bhp was 198 a yr. My classic NG tf is 90 at a 10k agreed value. My 200 bhp ml250 is £365 !!!, had I realized that I prob would have not bought it. You can get short term insurance but once you go over a month it's pretty much the same thing even canceling creates "a fee"., here in France you just have get the unused portion returned. No fee so far. Down side even if yr car off road in France, it has to be insured! That also caught me out... The theory. If someone nicks my car from my garage and then kills someone there is insurance for His victims...

Agreed, I think there will be some kind of curve and on that, various points where it is a no brainer bargain and like you have identified, makes it very expensive.

I forgot about the OBDII element.. I absolutely detest the idea of any kind of insurance business getting access to my driving info.

If this OBDII Big Brother business takes off I would imagine it will effectively keep insurance where it's at for the masses, but be used as a stick to beat extra premiums out of people.

Then don’t buy a newish car as it’s built in to “Mercedes Me” and the like across manufacturers.

Tracking is built in because if it’s a lease car they know where to go to recover it if you stop paying

Fair enough. Surely you can opt out of "Mercedes Me" in a regularly purchased car, at least (not leased/hpi etc).
