Hi, I have just sold my second LPG Mercedes with 200k miles on it, 130k miles on LPG, it was a W210 E200 estate Vreg, no problems at all but it depends on the quality of the conversion, the MPG dropped to 25 on gas but at 30p per ltr it equates to 70MPG. Before that I ran an S280 on gas, that did 20MPG but the tank was too small being in the spare wheel well and the range was only 200 miles, no problems with either car and the oil came out as clean as it went in, Steve.
Many thanks for your views.
You seem to be proof, due to the amount of miles covered, that our vehicles can run on LPG.
I am in the process of looking round various installers for the very reason that you stated (quality of installation).
I ran a LPG powered car before I went over to diesel. Quality of installation is important, size of gas tank is important, pain in the neck if it is too small. You need to try to size it to give you at least 200 miles between refuelling stops. If you have it in the boot.... I had it raised up on supports tight under the rear parcel shelf so I could get things in under the tank....buggies, etc etc. The 500 miles on diesel is one of the great assets of diesel. The LPG installation does involve tapping into the cooling system and some plumbing changes.
On plus side spark plugs never foul, oil changes can be greatly extended as the LPG is much cleaner.
I used it for about 80,000 miles without any problem from the LPG system. No overheating problems or other concerns.
There is a loss of power resulting in a lower MPG figure but the cost saving more than compensates. Mine was fitted with a fuel switch which could be used on the move to change from LPG to petrol....with appropriate 'turbo boost'. The car was non turbo so don't know what effect LPG has on a turbo. I must admit its a great way to run a bigger older car at more ecnomical level.
There's a lot of info on the Ford Scorpio site on LPG conversions, including the links to some good dealers who have done conversions. Have a look at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/svilpg.htm for details of a full blown LPG injection conversion.
I had a w124 300 te converted to lpg and did over 140,000 trouble free miles in it. I still have the pump to refill the car tank from a 47 kg cylinder. A 47 kg cylinder was costing me £18 and held nearly 100 ltrs. I think the 124 300TE was one of the best cars merc ever made. If only the new ones were half as good.........
