Can you lock the boot with the key

Having problems which meant that the central locking does not work at the moment. I unlocked the boot with the key, but it will not stay locked by the key and can be opened. Is this normal and needs to be locked with central locking? 2006 SLK 200

You can lock it with the key… turn the key the other way with the boot closed

No that doesn't work. It still opens
