Why do the dealers or any workshop cover the dash cam when they undertake work on our beloved cars, once asked a recovery agent for MB and he said it was for data protection ? biggest load of bull I have ever heard, It has always concerned me that they may have something to hide form the owner of a car. Would like to know how many members have views on this practice. I myself would not mind my work being recorded at any time while I carry out repairs. My merc recently went into a local MB dealer and i received a short video for a health check i had pointing out slight play in the bottom track control arm for which I was very grateful and had repaired shortly after so no harm done, maybe they have magic shows or pole dancers on at lunchtime lol.

I expect it’s more of GDPR and the rights of the workers being filmed than anything nefarious

Used to have a C63...
They've been caught too many times treating customer cars in ways they shouldn't, and when they shouldn't. Still have the clips of MB Dorchester doing so to mine!

It's convenient to hide behind data protection, privacy, etc. In my opinion... of course.

(Ironically, the Indies I've used over the years, different marques, don't have the same sensitivities! Oh, neither did Hyundai main dealer).

Never had an issue myself, all cars have obvious cameras in them. Even when I’ve given the go ahead to give it some etc. I used to get a few techs looking at it curiously when they may not have been as common as they are today but nice to see the cars were not abused. However as mentioned some garage workers do sadly abuse customers cars but there should be no need to cover or tamper with ones such h belongings.

I’m old fashioned, if you have nothing to hide and are always acting within reason then what does one have to hide?

I like to talk to the cars. Sometimes I sympathise with them when I discover mistreatment. I don’t really want the owner to hear any of this, it’s private between me and the car. That’s why I unplug the dashcam during service… :)

I was about to say that MB Southampton don’t turn the cameras off but then I can’t recall actually checking the footage so I now wonder. I know that @Cole@MBS used to leave it on when he had my previous car because I could see where he took it at lunchtime (sorry took it for a test drive!) but my lips are sealed on that.

I don’t turn them off, if someone pulls out in front off me and I hit them, i have proof I wasn’t to blame, I don’t drive any cars hard or fast so don’t bother me what there recording!

To hide all the effing and blinding that goes with shredding knuckles.
Easy to use privacy as an excuse, They will be asking us to cover our eyes next and erasing our memories.
An honest person has nothing to hide.

If a customer left a camera in their car with film in it while we were working on the car they would get a picture record of the work done. I can remember the boss having a meeting with us lads after 1 or 2 customers complained. I mean, celebrities should not leave stuff in theirs cars. We would not get away this sort of thing now :( :D
