Hi
I have a problem with my car. It goes into limp mode. I took it to local garage ( mercedes specialist ). I was told it needs new electroplate and valve body. They qoted me 1500 pounds, that includes transmission oil change. Not sure if this is about right. What is intersting, a week after i brought my car there they told me they cannot fix it because the parts they have to order need to come from mercedes in germany. For them to order parts i need to prove that i am owner of the vehicle - they need my log book, id, proof of address - now this feels wierd, doesn't it??

Get yourself another indy, and quick.

The one you are using are massively overchargingif you even need a new electroplate.
As for needing your log book/ID /address before ordering, I smell bullsh1t.

Again, find another indy and get a proper diagnosis.

Hmm, maybe they want to buy a key for it, as that's the only time ID's needed

Guys you DO need ID and car docs to order security coded parts, (you are condemning an indie even if he is overpriced, but he may have to go to a dealer to code).
Search threads on here. If an early 7g box it might need the valve body as well as the tcu, comes complete or if later you can just fit the tcu. We stock 2 tcu's but others cannot get hold of them?

Fair enough. I wasn't aware of that. He is still overpriced though.

I'm sure theres a reason but I think its shocking that a gearbox part is deemed to need 'security' coding. its a gearbox!!!! why not just make them plug and play? or am I missing something?

Thanks for replies. It is actually the best mechanic in the area. They only do mercedes, not a regular, general garage. That probably comes with the price but if its not far off for: electroplate, valve body, diagnostic, and oil change, i thinks i would stick to them. How much is that suppose to cost - we are talking about genuine, mercedes parts? Just wasnt sure about ID thing, it smelled funny, but they did mention some security codes. So now i belive its all good.

The security aspect is true, don't forget lots of parts are immobilised without the key and an auto box will not move from park if immobilised stopping it being towed away, the price is steep though fella, I am sure he is good but does he employ the F1 pit crew or something ??

How much should they be asking for the parts and labout ( diagnostic, electroplate, valve body, transmission oil change )? I really have no idea...

I am taking back my jump to arms at the price quoted, actually looks fair enough when parts costs broken down, god I am old and out of touch, I thought a "monkey" would cover it and a ten bob tip:D

An early 7G will likely need the whole valve body at around £1000. Add oil and filter, a bit of labour and some VAT and you are around the £1500 mark.

Car fixed all seems fine, feels a lot faster now, one thing though. When i have it on neutral and shift to drive i do not feel shifting at all, none. However when i have it on drive, brake, stop, keep the brake and than shift to neutral i can feel it changing. Very, very, very light "knock". It is smooth in betwen gears, just drive -> neutral, not so smooth. Is it how it is suppose to be?
