I strongly suspect that it is common practice for Halshaws to not pass on the service history. They did this with a car I bought from them and I have had 50000 trouble free miles with it. Others I know have had similar experience. Quite why it happens I don't know. If it was advertised with full service history they have misrepresented the sale and you can I suspect get your money back. If the car is fine I wouldn't worry too much but I would get a full service done.
Also would a 5 year old car have a service book? All electronic surely?

I did think that might be a waste of time. I'm just concerned as when they sell the car on it may be worth less if it doesn't have any service history. Also with no service history can they be sure everything is okay with the car? I'm almost certain the car was advertised as have a FSH as I have always advised my daughter in law not to buy a car without that. Someone had obviously done something to the car though as the A Service advisory came up on the dash a couple of weeks ago.

I don't think there's an awful lot you can do about this - I have the same issues with my daughters. I've kept hold of the responsibility of looking after their cars even though they're both married, but it's major hassle even organising servicing around their busy lives, and worse if anything goes wrong.

Their husbands are both hopeless, especially one of them, and he drives one of our old cars. He drove it for a month (probably longer before I noticed) on a tyre with a slow puncture (doing a 50 mile commute) and was when he finally took it for repair was surprised that it couldn't be repaired. His solution to a flat battery caused by leaving the interior light on recently was to emergency join the AA, at a cost of £200! It should have been covered by Honda Assist, but he'd not bothered to make sure the dealer renewed the cover (even though daughter had told him to) and Honda kindly refused to help. I'd have been furious, he just shrugged.

I think you just have to let them get on and learn from their own mistakes - they don't readily welcome 'guidance' and in anything car related the answers often aren't black or white.

When I bought my S203 (private sale) it had been supplied and serviced by MB Brentford, I received the latest service invoice from the seller but not earlier ones. After much kerfuffle with MB Brentford (data protection BS!) they finally agreed to print off the earlier service invoices, cut off the top part with the first owners name and address (even though I told them I had that on the V5 and latest service invoice!) and post them to me. Conversly, when buying the S204 from MB Ashford (again, a car they had supplied new and serviced) I asked about previous service invoices, the salesman simply printed the whole lot off and handed them to me!

If you want to turn detective and find the original advert from Evans Halshaw, find out exactly when the car was purchased, then see if a copy of their website was saved on this useful link. You may get the evidence it was described as having a service history.
Then Evans Halshaw can be held to account for misleading adverising .

What really annoyed me when I had my car on a service plan is that I never got a stamped book or any info on what parts had been replaced.
"Oh it's all on our computer sir", just doesn't do it for me.

The only useful reason to have a service history is because people use it as a bargaining chip when you come to sell. In my experience it's the worst, unreliable garage queen cars that have the biggest history. Some even have low mileage because they're off the road so often! Buy on condition above anything else.

When I bought my car it had no history with it as all kept online, I called MB Basingstoke to ask about it and they told me it was all up to date.

When I had it serviced at my Indy he printed all the history off and updated it on Xentry so it is all current with MB

It must vary from dealership to dealership as I have a service plan and on completion of my last service had paperwork describing the service and work done but without costing.

I can't work out how that site works, I know they bought the car on 14th October 2017 but haven't been able to find a way to search for a Mercedes, maybe I am doing it wrong?

If you want to PM me with a few details ( Exact model, colour, Registration, branch where it was purchased, price paid) I'll do some digging and see if I can find the original advert.
I can't promise to find it, but its worth a look if it was advertised as full/part main dealer service history and it turns out there isn't any record at all. Your son didn't get what he paid for.

Not sure if there was anything on the original paperwork but I will ask them to have a look.

Seems the car has had 2 previous owners, the last one was up in Leeds and there is an address so I think writing to them would be a good idea. The numberplate on the car says Mercedes Benz MK, I think MB HO is there isn't it? It was registered in December 2013 and sold to the next person a year later. The email from MB quotes that they only hold data on service history if it's been carried out at a main dealership, so maybe it was taken to an indie and that's why there is no record? We take ours to an indie, so does that mean the only record of our cars history since we bought it is the printout from the indie? Good job we make sure we keep everything in our house!

Sounds like that car was originally an MB UK owned car, often sold on after a year or less.

As for Dear MB Customer Services .... you have to press them and then press again.
And then miraculously they come up with the full electronic service data record!

I would be straight onto EH, like you sold me a car with FSH and it does not have one, I want my money back!
You betcha suddenly they will find the service history or conclusively prove it was specifically sold with no service History. Shift the onus onto them!
If they say we didnt say it had a service history... make them show you the advert. And prewarn them if they fiddle with it ... you will report them for fraud to the local police stn.

I had a similar thing with Mobilo ...mthey swore blind they didnt come out to my car, and they didnt replace the battery. 3 calls later they were still adamant they didnt come out. And I was stareing at the Job sheet, and the credit card print out reciept, and 5 pages of Star Inital faults all due to undervoltage!
Finally on the 4th Call they admited they had a system change and my car had 2 historys!
And yes sorry you were right , we did come out and did change the battery!

They didnt even get the joke when I asked for the number of “their weed guy” .... ala the movie TED .. if youve seen that you will know what I mean :)

Anyone checked the MoT history? If it's 5 years old, it will have three MoTs and from tat you can check the mileage and any fails or advisories indicating that some work may have been done.

Didn't think of that, will check that now, thanks :D

Well it passed it's MOT in 2016 and 2017, it had 1 advisory in 2016 but just for rear brake pads.

For this year it failed on not having 4 wheel nuts on each wheel and it has 4 advisories, all for front tyres and brake pads which I guess is just normal wear and tear.

Seems like nothing out of the ordinary. i forgot to add that you can also see if the car has been clocked from the recorded mileage on the MoT history. Glad to have helped!
