Interesting. Very. What made you post it? Is there a secret message hidden here somewhere, which I have failed to spot. Like thank God we don't live in Denmark!

I do not know why I posted it. I dont think many members are interested.
It was just an indication of what we all pay and how.

Some threads work,some do not.

It's interesting to see the different tax levels throughout Europe.
Regarding the car tax levels, as Hawk says it's fortunate we don't live in Denmark but do the manufacturers not compensate for this in their pricing structures for each country?. My sister-in-law used to work for IBM and dealt with this side of their business, she showed me their worldwide pricing structure and it was dramatically different for each country to take into account the tax levels and what the market would stand, needless to say at that time UK was near the top pricewise.
Malcolm, I don't think it's that there is no interest, it's just difficult for the usual culprits to moan when UK seems to be doing pretty well taxwise for once.

Regarding the price levels, yes the manufactures do compensate, back in the late 90s you could save £8k on a £40k car through buying in Holland, The Swedes used to buy in Danmark. Most of these loop holes have now been closed.
The atual tax in Danmark is a 2 tier, you pay 105% tax on the first £7.600 and 180% on the remaider. A Volvo S60 is £70k in Danmark, that would also make my SL new £250k, Houses there are cheap though. France will be next to base a tax on the emissions.

Ireland is 21% VAT on top of the VRT which runs between 22.5 and 30% depending on engine size. So you are paying up to half the open market price of a car to the government. You'll be pleased to learn we don't care judging by the new car sales (about 160,000) and the government has a current account surplus of 5 billion euro. Can these two things be connected?! :D

Hi Mike, rip off republic as usual. Looked up VRT for importing a 1990 SL500 and it varies with an average of 5000euro(3400stg). I remember when VRT was about 15punts but then there was import duty which had to be abolished cos we are in the EU, low and behold the new VRT had incresed to......what the nice men in the VRT thought the car is worth in the Irish market and charged you 30% of that(import duty disguised). Its a 17 year old car, give us a break.
Anywho, what r u driving now Mike, have you done the sensible thing and defected to driving japanese?

I'm in an early Audi A6 this weather, not sure how long I'm going to keep it as part of me thinks I should offload it in the spring and buy a diesel or 'shopping trolley special' for a few years cheap motoring before plunging into the big engined classic market (ie no road tax!) I like the idea of a BMW 6 series or a W116 for the laugh.

Beyond the VRT & the VAT here in Paddyland, we're getting screwed over on Road Tax.

I just forked out €1400 euro for my W220 S320. Pain in the arse I tell ya, that's €500 more than my insurance. Then again if I go for a PSV (public service vehicle) licence I can tax it for €75.00.

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than taxing my 72 350sl for 50euro a year, costs me a fortune in juice but what the hell.
Must look into this PSV licence, can it be obtained without a test etc?
Mike
