Well.....
Warranty Direct I assume.
On the basis that its still 90-100% I just renewed the policy on the Jeep. However, that was primarily because anything on the transmission side on a jeep is megabucks. However, I still think it's very borderline. After all, thats now £800 I've spent and that would go a long way to repair most things, especially if you are shop around. If we go into next year, it will be £1200 and I will have lost on the deal. To be honest I probably wouldn't have renewed and taken the risk myself, but the Mrs insisted.

I had one one the 240 last year too, but in reality, the only things that went were the dash cluster (£700) and plug leads (£250). Neither is covered so I paid out £400 for the warranty + £250 and didn't have the dash done. I took it out in case something like the ECU went. My thinking at the time as that it would be a £1000 hit, however, I've since discovered it could also be repaired for a couple of hundred. In truth, most items can. It all depends on how you go about it.

I looked at the list and my view was that when it dropped to 50% and £400 it isn't really worth it. The chances of something on the list failing is small and there are plenty of things not on the list that are probably going to go instead so you'll end up like me forking out for a warranty and still paying for the repair. After all, you're in for a chunk if you are covered.

I recently bought a warranty from the dealer for the 270. Ok it covers from when the maufacturer's warranty ends so is for a 4 year old car, but for £650ish the policy is turned around. Instead of listing what is covered, there is a short list of what isn't. Obvious things such as tyres, exhaust (cat is covered), brake pads etc Everything else is to 100% of value inc fitting. In comparison, I'd say that is probably better value.

On the up-side, my specialist did say they'd had succesful claims with them so if the worst does happen, they should pay out.

I think your right about the warrenty costing, my wife had a Jeep, which was maintained by a Jeep dealer and as we purchased it second hand from them, we purchased the warrenty. Towards the second year of ownership, she had a problem with the rear diff, OK I said don't worry, we'll get it done under warrenty, wrong! Turns out that one of the services that we had done was about 300 miles over! This invalidated their T's & C's and I had to fork out £800 to get it fixed. Be careful and read the small print!

What really P'd me off was that seem to remember having a problem booking the car in for servicing anyway, as they were so busy and she used the jeep for business and clocks up around 500 miles per week, so quickly went over the interval, be warned. I now put the money for this in a separate maintenance account and hav not had to dig into this for 5 years!

There are always at least two sides to each tale - I was with warranty direct for the last car - 12 months year one then about 2 months year two (then I sold it).

In year one I claimed about £3k and year two (week 2!!) I claimed £2.6 so at an annual premium of (I think) about £450, money well spent.

My policy covered main dealer rates, wear & tear (tyres etc excluded) and consequential damage for an insured part breaking an uninsured part, annual claim limit £7.5k

They are of course horrible people to deal with unless you are buying, but that's the downside of dealing with all insurance companies as it is prerequisite to be in that market to (just about) lie, cheat, conceal, mislead, argue, debate what is covered, delay on payment but after the dust settled with me, I was the one left smiling.

In the past i've 'self insured' by sticking a monthly amount (I did £50, you may choose/need to put away more than this) into a cash ISA, specifically for the purpose of covering servicing and repairs. I never had to spend anywhere near what I had in the fund, so basically i ended up quids in, but even if it is short for the cost of a major repair, you will at least be a lot nearer to covering the cost yourself.
