I've got a 1986 300 E which has developed a fault when idling. It is very difficult to start as it tends to cut out as soon as I put into gear. If I do manage to get it going it often cuts out when slowing down at traffic lights etc... ,a lthough sometimes it speeds up if I'm not careful. A guy at the Merc dealers said it might be the auxiliary fuse box, which may require a new 16A fuse. The problem is I can't find an auxiliary fusebox, even though he said it was quite easy to find. It doesn't seem to be the thing behind the main fuxe box, which is full of relays. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

He could be talking about the OVP relay fuse. It could be your fuel pump relay that is the problem, both are behind the battery.

The Aux fuses (within the main fuse box) has a 16A fuse for an auxilary heater.

The real auxiliary fuse box (next to the main fusebox) was fitted to later 124s with a larger (30A) fuse for Climate, and a 16A for heated seats, pernament current for trailer). If you didn't have climate, you would not have this.

also sounds a bit like

idle control valve? The trouble is a lot of things give similar symtoms when they are messing about. Have you tried goosing up the idle speed to compensate?

Myros - where is the idle control valve and how do I goose it up ? (I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to car repairs!)

Pascal - the only thing I found behind the battery that looked anything like a fuse was a vertical rectangular box with a red thing marked 10A with two spade-like connectors. Do you think this is what he meant ? He did say 16A but maybe he got it wrong ?

Just going from memory (not great lately), thats the Over-Voltage Protection relay and its fuse. The fuel pump relay is beside it (bigger) (no fuse).

Take the OVP fuse out of the holder, check, clean contacts for starters.

The two relays, Myros'es idle control valve, and 'dirty' injectors usually are the culprits for problem. (one of these)
