It seems theres a number or letter missing. It should have 17 not 16 characters.

You are missing a part of the code, But:

Is it a black 500SEL with air-con, electric orto seats, sunroof (83-84) M117 engine? etc etc

Has a very high spec. Embasey car?

the digit missing is either... 1 or 2... or very unlikely a 6
this is the way vin numbers are read.....

2 1=LHD 2=RHD 6=knock down kit (assembled from a kit)
F assembly plant
123456 unique id
1 warranty check digit

this is a basic breakdown... and it has changed a bit over the years...
ie the 2F was once 2 numbers 22 rhd/auto
20 rhd/manual
and in the 50's.........
xxx 043 35 12345 <note only 5 numbers in unique id
35 reverse to make 1953 build year /45 = 1954 etc

all the rest id expect on a standard 500sel......
in the 'good old days' 'options' <known as SA's> were all listed <SA = anything over a basic spec> nowdays only items over standard <for that model> are listed....
what i mean by that is a S280<W140> doesnt have self leveling as std... if one was built with it it would be shown as an SA, where as an S600<W140> has self levelling as std, so its NOT shown as an SA.... so as a partsman you NEED to know what every model, in every year has as a basic spec!
then.... you get imports....which may have a different basic spec..!
