If you notice a significant difference, either you have not been servicing it regularly enough or the manufacturers schedule is wrong. General service maintenance should be replacing parts before they inhibit performance.

Ignorance and complacency are the main reason and I feel unfortunately, are becoming more and more prevalent as time goes by and not just for the tyres but for all the daily, weekly recommended checks where in fact nothing has changed significantly in my lifetime! It is blatantly clear that there are so many forum members who could not have either read or understood the documentation that came originally with their vehicle, it would even appear that some think it fashionable not to have done so! :(

I still genuinely feel that new air filters make the car feel slightly faster/smoother or however you decide to describe it . Maybe that's just be being very attuned to my vehicle

Its low grade intellectual snobbery on par with those who feign lack of "DIY" skills I said to one person who proudly proclaimed they couldn't change a plug,

"with that level of inability to carry out simple tasks or follow instruction you probably would be diagnosed with a learning disability".

I always think the car feels quieter and smoother, but I know it's just placebo at play.

The only time I recall the car definitely feeling better was last year when MBS did my E Coupe - that service included new air filters and a transmission oil change.

    No not really...

In fact changed all filters on the wife's Ford s-Max this weekend and the fuel filter was filthy black not sure it’s been changed in 6 years and 30k miles... it seems to be running a bit smoother???

Remember thinking about my e220cdi which had full MB history from the same dealer - I got it at 50k and realised 18 months later that at 92k miles and 4 years that it had never been changed it was completely blocked up the mpg improved immeasurably! A £22 part.... lost faith after that and it only went to an independent after that till 150k miles when I did it myself a couple of times...

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, no. Maybe there is that nice just serviced feel that I had, but after 30 minutes I'f already forgotten it was serviced. It is nice knowing you've got new oil and a filter though.

Yes and no. If you stay on top of it, it should feel fine unless you leave it for extended periods, after which point you should notice a difference as the parts you swap out will be more degraded. Also as for dealerships nowadays, for general servicing, very little is done so no surprises if the cars don't feel any different.

    I do 800-1000 miles a week in my daily driven Volvo and the general maintenance looks like the following;

5,000 miles fresh filters, engine oil
10,000 miles add's spark plugs and general checks for vac/boost even if there are none.
20,000 miles adds new turbo boost solenoid, new brake fluid.
30,000 miles adds gearbox ATF flush and fill, coolant change and new power steering fluid.
70,000 miles adds suspension overhaul, new mounts, shocks, springs, bushes etc.

As I never let anything get missed they always feel good unless somethings not been put back together quite right etc.

You save a fortune doing this yourself, unless it's your local garage?

Yep, can DIY most things but, I have 3 independent garages that I also use who have worked with me and on all my cars over the last 20 years so they know how fussy I am and charge between £30-45 p/hr and don't drag work out.

Wow, doesn't that mean it's being worked on almost every month with a major suspension rebuild nearly every year??? My car gets (irregular) use that averages out at 400 miles/week so half yours... but it gets an oil/filter and air filter every year (or maybe 10 months if it's lucky) and levels checked once a month. Other parts are replaced when they give symptoms. And it's 33 years old.

It's nice you care for it but how much of that is replaced with years of life left. For example I've not replaced any shocks, springs and bushes in over 4 years and 80k miles and they had probably been going for years before hand and still pass the Spanish MOT. Here the computer gives the suspension a score on damping, and free play, etc. When I bought the car 4 and a half years ago it scored 62% and 80k miles later they score 58%. apparently new suspensions typically get 75% depending on car and 50% is the pass mark. I thought most of the suspension was designed to last 100s of thousands of miles and even the oil could go longer if the car is being driven lots of miles warmed up/ at cruise, etc.
