Chavs, modders and even those having a midlife crisis may put AMG/Brabus badges on their otherwise ordinary Merc to make their car appear to be something more than it is, to people who can't tell the difference, that is.

But, I saw a C class W202 the other day with a CLK badge on the boot - Why? I can't quite get my head around that one.

Also saw a Ssangyong a while back with a large mercedes badge on the bonnet. Fair enough they have the Merc engine, but whos the owner trying to kid!

Just thought I'd share this with you and see what you've seen people defacing their cars with.

What these people don't realise is that while they aspire to be true petrolheads, true petrolheads will instantly see through the fake badges and bodykits.

They are therefore, idiots.

I hate the number of S-line bodykits seen on new Audis. It completely devalues the exclusivity of the RS line of cars. I also saw what looked like a BMW 325 the other week, complete with M-badges and bodykit. Shame it had only a single exhaust :p

I agree. Most people haven't a clue what an AMG or M badge means. Those of us that do, also generally know enough to recognise a fake.
Reminds me of a phase in the 80s where ford dealers would fit XR body kits to 1.1 escorts and fiestas. But as they couldn't run to the wheels or exhaust systems, you had cars with wide wheelarches and a piddling 145/70/14 tyre and a plastic wheeltrim inside or a big rear skirt and a peeshooter exhaust.

Discussed this before, but at the time I had a 4 door escort, with 1.3L on the back and plastic wheeltrims. The engine was out of an XR3 and the tyres may have looked normal but were actually 2 sizes wider. Goes with my Merc Vs Audi/BM view. Speak softly and carry a big stick. Far better than shouting threats whilst wielding a twig!

I remember working on many "M powered" 316 BMWs in the 80s. Yeh right.

This kind of thing's always bugged me, to the extent that when I had an E30 BMW 318is, which has M-Tech suspension, I had to take the previous owners "M" badge off the back.
That's a great car by the way.

I can understand kids doing it, because it's an aspirational thing, but not grown up Merc drivers. it's like a "My other car's a Porsche" sticker but without the humour!

Someone near me has a Chrysler Crossfire. Now I know it's built by Karmann, and has a lot of the older Merc SLK in it, but this person has glued a chrome 'Karmann Ghia' badge from an old VW on to the back of it, and somehow fitted a Mercedes grill complete with large star on the front.
Why?
Will try get some pictures if it's parked on the street tomorrow.

The best ones from the 80's were the Fake Sierra Cosworths, they were hilarious!!

The most fakes I see on the roads around Leicester are the BMW's that have M-sport bodykits and accessories - they just look and sound minging!!

"My other car's a Porsche" sticker but without the humour!"

I used to have that sticker in my Golf !!!!!!! and one week in the summer I decided to use my 911 for work, only just started working for this company in banbury, so on the monday morning I arrive and parked up my 911.

It goes through the company like wild fire "who owns the 911". As I started early and finished late it was difficult for anyone to identify who actually owned it.

It took 4 days before someone said "thats your 911 isnt it?" "Yep thats mine" I said.

whilst in the gents taking a pee the MD walks in, German chap, he stands next to me and said "I dont like people working for this company driving a better car than me" and then he farted.

I had to leave the building for 15 mins I was laughing so hard.
