Cash-strapped councils to fine motorists for minor offences

All this just reminds me how I miss the politics forum, sites not the same without it.

If your councils are like ours here in Oz, they just keep on pushing the rates up at way above the inflation rate, getting involved in matters outside their control (e.g. the national immigration discussion), pay their chief executives more than the national Prime Minister gets, and keep on ranting about how broke they are. They need to get back to the basic 3 R's - rates, roads and rubbish.
Yeah, and that was just a very large pig that flew over!

Try driving round Blackpool (or better still don't). The place is inundated with cameras, mobile and static. They simply don't like visitors . The Police recently were fining motorists in the town for flashing warnings of the presence of mobile cameras to other drivers. One of the higher crime rates in the Uk, riddled with paedophiles, and some of the poorest estates in the country- talk about fiddling while Rome burns

Aah Blackpool, plenty of fake tan, threadbare fur coat and no knickers.

Had some entertainment there a few times, go at night the day time reality is a shock to the system.

Still its nice to hear they are targeting visitors perhaps its a business model above our understanding.

Some sort of reverse psychology, perhaps rooted in you always hurt the one you love or should do.

in 15 yrs in france i have yet to pay to park anywhere i have been ,different attitude, why would they want to impliment something that might stop you going to shop. same at hospitals, my french friends say , how can you be forced to pay to park,at a publicly owned facility ! dont you as a taxpayer already own it!!!

Swings and roundabouts, here too, it's only in city centres where you have to pay and then there is free parking within 500m-1km so it is always possible to not pay.

Not sure many members of the forum would use that free parking though...I regularly have to get out of a parallel space with less than 3 inches each side which involves going back and forwards 10 times...oh and parking is always done completely by touch, even when there is enough space not to, sometimes at 5-10mph

Those who care about their motors (about 5% of the population) are forced into the private ones but these charge 25€/day or more...

i live near a number of large towns , its never a crush to park ,there are times when some DH cant park straight, but its rare to have an issue getting in or out , by contrast if i go to the uk . i simply park about a k away at my folks and walk up and down the hill to town as many times as i have to to get what i need ,sometimes 8 or ten times a day. i WILL NOT pay to park in a place i can hardly get into and then fix the dings ,scratches i get where i have to pay to park and where somehow the car park owners have no liability for any damages .....

town council here has 6 traffic wardens , town centre is dead most days , on the OP's actual thread , I cant think just how local councils could do the job of the police and mores the point , does this not go to prove we have a severe lack of police on our streets ??
