Is getting the castor and camber setup a dealer only job or are there other places that can do this?

My car is sitting a bit high on the nearside, although these pictures make it look worse than it is.

Nice Christmas tree, a decent tyre specialist should have the necessary laser alignment equipment to do the setup for you.

Looking
Any decent place with 4-wheel laser alignment can do it. MB will charge you £250 - Micheldever start at £27 depending on how much adjustment is needed. Adjusting the geometry isn't going to make your car sit any lower - the adjustments are minimal for one thing which is why tyre wear has an adverse affect.

I'd suggest a spring / pad or damper is worn on one side.

And what i said before, that is if it is low on one corner at the rear, this will lift the opposite corner at the front.

Don't think your christmas tree is legal , you shouldn't have red lights showing to the front.:(

noted:

I'll replace the red bulbs with the spare yellow and blue ones I have.

I could always change them all to blue and then I could flash them on and off.

Lucky

I was visiting a friend this morning, who is involved in motor racing a bit. I asked him about castor and camber and he produced various books on the subject. He also produced a catalogue that had some basic tools to allow you to do this yourself, but these looked a bit basic.

A van rolled into the driveway with 'SAS, Scottish Alignment Services, on-site commercial laser wheel alignment' written on the side.

The guy that has this is also interested in motor racing as he was round with some bits for a gearbox. He could do my car, but would also need access to a ramp or a pit, which I don't have at present.

Are the figures, given in the haynes manual, correct for my car?

reading an article here where the car has to be forced bounced before the height can be tested.

red marker is a short spring. Blue is the long spring

MB only have the matching data on micro film for the rubbers

I spent 2 hours reading all of the set up for the suspension. Looking at the special tools required I cant see how other firms can do it without.

the Auto data does not cantain the different chassis set ups, In the colums in the left hand side anywhere where it says 124/05 refers to your car with the sports set up. I put a load more info out on MSN last night and I dont think you read it all, things about height gauges etc.

Anyone with a 124 or 201 could use this info as if you change a spring and the ride height changes by more than 20mm the whole thing needs setting up.
Its stored info now.

I can see how they do the camber but can't see how they could do the castor.

After four hours searching followed by your excellent quiz, my eyes are so sore I must give it a rest for a couple of days. I only have one usable eye, and thats +5.

You know that the caster is an imaginary line through the axis, on a normal Mac strut its easy to check. I will give you some more details over the holiday on your car. with a figure of 10 for your set up,that is quite high, but does give good straight line stability, it would also have the effect of lowering the front slightly.

I will report back later. Malcolm
