Hi guys, just wanted to share with you my sad experience - Sunday, November 7th, around 9 pm in West Dulwich, on the road just outside house, my SL320 has been lifted up and some ... cut of the catalytic converter. Neighbour saw some suspicious behaviour and called the police but it was too late. I don’t know how you (we) can protect your cars but be aware of it.
Wondering how much it will cost to fix?

I've heard that they don't like the replacement ones, scant compensation but it probably won't happen to you again.

Only drug addiction would make someone take such risks for such low returns.

Well and that section of the community that act like cowboys in the wild west with their own very skewed ideas of right and wrong and knowing their chances of being caught and then any significant sanction are low.

Its been going on for many years and sadly only takes a matter of minutes.

They jack up the car and chop of the cat with a cordless saw/angle grinder. The victims only notice it when they get in and start the car after the event to realise it sounds terrible.
With the dark afternoons upon us, I can imagine it will become more prevalent.
Check with the neighbours if anyone has CCTV.

Low lifes....

Hello again,

the police has arrived just a few minutes after that but it was too late, apparently thieves came in the small car with stolen reg plates.
I've been told by my car mechanic (over the phone) and SL expert that this will most likely happen again as they know now where my car is parked. He suggested a protection kit installed which will make access to the cat much harder but he has to check the damage first.
Will keep you updated...

Your new cat will be less attractive.

Maybe someone will suggest some sort of effective ghastly device for the scumbags to struggle with.

They wouldn't know which one I'll have installed now. BTW, new cat is not available for my car from Mercedes

Should be easy enough to find an aftermarket one. I found one for my 1993 500 SL without any difficulty.

I saw a you tube video from cctv not so long ago, a car pulled up opposite a parked car on a street with many other cars, 2 got out, one had a jack, the other a angle grinder. While the car was being jacked up the other scampered underneath and cut off the cat, it took a few minutes if that. They specially targeted that make of car.

All we can hope is that the car falls off the jack whilst they're doing the deed and causes the filthy scum of society to be traped under the car for long enough for the Police to get there.

Sorry to hear this. Do keep us informed if your mechanic has any luck with an anti-theft device for the cat.
