97 sl500 has powerflow cats WELDED into pipework. due to ( probably ) swimming in a flooded road they now sound like gravel shaken in a bean can on cold starts, better when warm. as 2 new ones are hideously expensive can I legally ( mot/emissions etc ) cheat and cut and disembowel them or will I have to pay up ? and any recommended places please.

I think that as your car is post 1991 you will have to have the Ctas installed and working for the M.O.T, but I'm sure that Maslcome (Television) will be able to give you a more definte answer

Interested in your thoughts on this one, my ML has what sounds like a cat rattle at 1600rpm, looking at the options as I will not pay best part of £900 for a new cat from MB.

no cat fitted

answer is yes, seen it done more than once, not difficult
So it will pass the mot will it, do you have to to have them fitted but gutted out and rewelded, or can you just put in another bit of pipe, and not have a cat on the car at all, i thought cats had to be fitted on all cars after a certain year and they had to be there on the exhaust for the mot, i have heard that some cars can pass the emissions with out a cat, i dont know anyone who has taken their car for a mot without the cat fitted so if you have done it please let us know more, im sure its not just me who is intrested in this.
