I have a 6 cd changer - model MC3198 installed in the boot of my car (W210 e200K). Recently it stopped working - error message on head unit read No CD.....1-6.
Further investigation revealed that cd's were not being picked out of casette.
I took the changer apart and by manually turning the mechanism I managed to get the cd's to load. I reconnected the stripped dowm changer and everything seemed to work ok. After reassembling everything it wouldnt work, stripped it again and got it to work.

I have a feeling that the mechanism needs to be lubed - looks dry, any suggestions on what kind of lubricant is safe to use.

Thanks in advance

Simple to overlook but are you sure you've loaded the c.d's the correct side up in the cassette before you load it into the unit? I've done this a few times & come up with the message!! You seem to have the same sense of curiosity as me & an eye for a quick, cheap fix which often is just that.Otherwise I'd have it looked at by a specialist repairer who shouldn't disturb the lens etc.

cds loaded and played when i connected stripped down. lens seems ok. i reckon that teh mechanism has dried out - there seems to be some tyoe of white lube on the moving parts.

be careful as to what you do use as the last thing you need is for any lubricant to spread around to where it shouldn't go, like the lens or onto the cd's . i'll try & pop into Richer Sounds & ask what they use in the repair workshop.White lube ........ could it be Lithium but I'll check first?

Just confirming that we use white grease for the plastic slides and gears on multi changers. in some ways this is not always ideal as it it so soft it can disapear off the surface. A newer and better one is the one made by Electrolube, this SPG is a clear grease made for plastics CPC part numberSASPG35SL £6.94

There you go , Malcolm answers on the button again (just as well as I couldn't find Richer Sounds when i shot into leeds earlier. Was there about ten years ago when i last looked!!)
50p a time could make a nice little earner for an ASK MALCOLM thread........
All that knowledge & expertise is invaluable

Richer sounds use a central service dept, and do not repair in house.
I wish that I got normal faults on my cars, I spend hours serching for any leads, but alas know one has ever heard of them

Just adding a bit about the grease used, the main criterion is that its not sticky or tacky, put some in between two finger,it must not pull or offer any resistance. so that under any temperture range it will not melt or get stiff. White grease is not sticky and is the only thing used in locks.

CD changers work on both mechanical and electronic timing, if an operation is not completed in a certain time it will reject the disc.

Thanks for all your comments. I sourced some light silicon grease from a colleague and have applied it on the mechanism. Everything working smoothly now. Thanks again for your help

I had the same problem, solved it by vacuming out the space that the disc cassette went in to as this had aquired some muck that was stopping the cassette from locating correctly.
