An ML 270 (OM612.963) with ~90,000 kilometers on it has developed a rattling noise that varies with acceleration.
The noise is more noticeable when the engine is warm and can even be heard with the window down.

I was hoping it would be injector related but the first indie garage that inspected it said there is a fault in cylinder 2. I’m having a hard time believing this so I’m planning to take the car to another garage for a second opinion.

It may be worth mentioning that about 10,000 kilometers or 1.5 years ago, the engine’s temp went slightly above 100C before I shut it off almost immediately (fan failure) and had it towed away. I’m unsure if this event could have caused an engine damage but there was no apparent sign in the coolant or oil cap that the head gasket was blown since then.

I made a short video on the noise that can be heard in the back of the ticking noise. The ticking noise has been there for ages and seems normal to me, it’s the banging noise that’s unfamiliar to me.

As you can reproduce the noise at idle, it's easy to disable the injector on diagnostics and see if it goes away.
