Cdi fuel problem

My vito 108cdi keeps 'running' itself out of fuel, the fuel delivery pipe that runs from the fuel filter to the pre pump is pumping a mixture of diesel and air, then after a minuet or two it stalls with nothing but air in the fuel pipe. Could this be the high pressure pump on it's way out?

sounds as if it can't lift diesel from the tank,have you checked the pipes for air leaks

I think that you will find that a leak in the fuel or return line can give this problem. there are many threads on the forum on solving the leaking pipes.
