(I know this is an old chestnut but I can't find the answer the forum.)

When I click the button on the key, the LED lights up but nothing else happens. That is, there isn't any response from the car, no clicks, nothing.

Even when I push down the button on the drivers door, none of the other doors lock.

Any idea where to start looking?

Checked the fuse box?
Always the first place to check when anything electrical goes wrong is the fuse box.
Then this forum.
Then a garage.

I checked the fuse box. Everything is OK and everything else works.

Is there any test to check that the key thing is working?

If the Central locking does not work off the key, There is a good chance the fault is with the pump under the rear seat, either wiring or pump itself,
The central locking works off both front doors and boot lock on an estate

Central locking

What the remote key does is one thing and what the locking system does is another! Fault-find each separately

If the central locking doesn't work from the car (get in and try pushing down the locking buttons) then either the pump has gone (it's under the rear seat, passenger side) or it has no power. Fault-find that

If the remote lights up - great, the battery works! But what else does? Is it a Mercedes RCL system or an aftermarket one? Is it connected to an alarm? Does that work?

I'd start with the locking (which is pneumatic, operated by an air pump) and then sort the remote

You're right, I'll worry about the key thing later.

Locking the passenger or drivers door doesn't trigger anything.

I'll have to get in under the rear seat and see what is going on.

The people I bought the car from said something about switching the alarm off. They, and me, never really lock the car that much anyway. (The previous owners didn't take the keys out the ignition half the time).

If its the pump that has failed, there is one for sale on ebay for £25. A breaker could supply you with one for not much more. A new one costs £140.

Mine had burnt out and really smelt cooked. Easy fix though.

I have had a look at the unit. The motor in the pump unit is totally siezed. I guess it would be to much to expect that I could buy the motor on it's own somewhere.

This unit is a very simple piece of equipment, I can't see why it should cost so much. The total cost of the components can't be more than £20!

Vacuum Pump

Hi

Go for the used pump on ebay. A vacuum pump for my trusty steed set me back £340 (dealer fitted) a couple of years back.

Think Audi's reception staff used smelling salts to bring me around!

Tell-tale signs, car unlocked itself, alarm activated, slow locking, etc.

£340 sounds a tad expensive. It's only a matter of lifting the carpet and then unplugging a couple of things. It should only take 10 minutes, to fit, at the most.

New pump is about £100 on Euro Car Parts.

I'll check ebay.
