Hi All,
It would appear that my S320 CDI Cat is starting to give up the ghost! I have been informed that the ceramic fixture inside is broken, hence the tap tap noise under the car.
Has anyone bypassed their Cat or have any advice rather than spending £1100.00 ?

Ta,

Bruce.

I was told the same by MB. However local indie diagnosed fault as severed pipe on vacuum pump. Also, if it is the front Cat, I had a quote of about £700 including VAT and labour.

My advice is to remove the cat (and pipe), cut a hatch in the top of it (so it can't be seen by looking under the car), gut the cat material with a big screwdriver (wear a mask while doing so), empty the contents out, get a mate to weld it back shut, and put it back on the car.

I would like to know how the wire mesh cats work, having opened up the the box and removing the ceramic cat it would be good if one could put in a mesh cat. Its an easy job with an angle grinder to open up the box and weld it closed,I have done that.

Cant answer that one being a diesel, don't know if someone else can. I will do a search on wire mesh cats, some sites had the exploded veiws.

I'm in the process of replacing my exhast, apre cat, for the MOT. I can see into the cat at the moment, looks like a lot of cardboard in there. Let me know if I can be of help.

Doesn't matter on a diesel. Cats aren't required. So long as it passes the smoke test you'll be fine, and the best way to pass a smoke test is to give the car a ****** good ragging before you take it to the MOT centre, and make sure they test it while the engine is still nice and warm.
