I’ve just been looking back (again) at the paper work I got when I bought my car used, and it’s a pretty minor thing but I still have the original certificate of conformity when the car was built and date and signed off!
Is this a rare thing to find or is it just something common in buying a used Mercedes?

Every car should come with it from new but it's often one of the first things lost.

I assumed that was the case, just didn’t know if people kept onto them.

Useful to keep as if you or a potential buyer want to register it in a foreign country it's often required.

We needed ours to apply for the French Crit d'Air sticker - the V5 didn't show the Euro5 classification.

Was a complete pain in the backside when I imported my Golf from Ireland.

Had to pay €150 to VW for a document only available in German, and had to go pains to translate it, with DVLA telling me they would reject it if invalid.

Surprisingly it got accepted first time.. I reckon they couldn't really validate it because it was German too.. they probably just matched up numbers.

All they really need to do is read off the EN numbers that state the European Standards it conforms to. Don't really need to know German to do that...

Oh really..? I had to translated loads of values like noise levels, emissions and all sorts of stuff from the German CoC to the DVLA form.

Maybe they didn't read it but they said if it was invalid, the application would be rejected.

Whilst we are/were in the EU, all that matters is that the car conforms to the relevant EU standards. If it is sold in one EU country it has to be acceptable in all EU countries. When we were applying for the French Crit d'Air sticker for our Merc, all the French wanted to see was the relevant EN number for Euro5 on the Certificate of Conformity. And the Certificates are all to a common layout for the whole EU so they knew where to look.
I suspect that the DVLA were just being officious, Little Englanders.

Interesting. We imported a UK Smart for 2 to Greece and the Greek authorities insisted we supplied a C0fC. When you consider that 1/2 the vehicles on the road in Corfu are Smart cars you'd think they'd know that they are built to EU standards. Cost me £120 from Mercedes.

I don't believe I've ever had a car, either new or 2nd hand, that came with a CofC.

Well it wouldn't be the first time a government agency acted that way.. or last unfortunately.

Our E350 has it in the handbook wallet, in a bright yellow folder so that it looks important and doesn't get thrown away. Not sure about the other cars - I must look.

Ours says not to keep it in the car - which is, presumably, why so many get lost along the way. I handed in the one for my C207 when I part-exchanged it but I suspect it will have then got lost along the way through the auction/trader/2nd owner process.
