Hi all,
My sprinter 208d is rattling a bit and i have been informed it is the timing chain.
There is evicence of the chain having hit a rail (described to me as a guide rail or guard rail) that sits just above the chain. I have booked for the chain to be replaced.

However the damage to the rail is minute and i have heard of suggestions that the tensioner can get clogged with dirt and not work properly.
Any opinions on this?
Should i try cleaning the tensioner first and if so is it a job for myself with some advice from this forum or an expert only job.

Lastly, the mechanic i booked to replace the chain has said the chain will have a removable link which will allow him to "wind" the chain into place without too much dismantling of the engine but a slip on the cog would mean a great deal of work.
Is this a standard or desirable approach to fitting a chain?

Thanks in advance

First here is a link for a 117 not your engine but the principles apply.

The tension er can be washed out, with no problem and do bare in mind that any debris has gone into the whole oil system, so just replace the oil and filter when you are done.

If you would like the correct work sheets please just put up the first 6 VIN numbers

I replaced the tensioner in my 310 last year, it started rattling when on a long run, been fine since. Think it cost about 60 quid and a doddle to do if you follow instructions.

At the price, i would fit new. No point messing with second hand parts. Just my opinion.

I would remove the VIN for now, television is erm, temporarily absent.

At least I hope it's temporary!

I would replace rather than clean, at the price it doesn't seem worth the effort.

Had the chain changed over weekend so had the mechanic change the tensioner.
I asked him whether he filled the tensioner with oil before fitting it and he said no as it fills itself. This is contrary to other advice i have read on other threads but is it okay to do his way.
The van has been on a run of around thirty miles and the slapping noise of the old chain has gone.

Yes but being as it wasn't primed properly do i need to remove it and prime it or will it have filled itself properly by now.

The engine sounds sweet enough!
