Changed ATF and now have now 3rd gear, 1975 350SL

After changing the ATF, I now DO NOT get 3rd gear (top). I checked level with the engine running and was cautious not to over fill. Drove for a short period, there was some initial slip in 3rd, but top up oil level when I got back.
All other gears work correct.
Have I damaged the transmission or does any one have any tricks eg bleeding, (done P,R,N,D)
Any ideas what the problem is?

Changing gearbox oil.

Did you replace the filter?

If you did, remove the sump and check it. If it has not seated correctly, you will loose pressure internaly.

If you didn't, I would certainly recommend doing this before looking for any other causes.

If the sump gasket wasnt seated properly, and if the sump was pressurised, then the oil would be blown out in mega-seconds.... wouldn't it?

Yes it would, but it is the cork seal around the neck of the filter that will cause the loss of pressure internally with no leak visible on the outside.
