I have bought the brake pads for my 1996 C Class W202 Mercedes and taken off the wheel, ready to start. However ....

They only have one sensor, whereas I was expecting to find two sensors.

On the back of the disk drum, on the side nearest the engine, there is one hexagon bolt, and there is another hexagon bolt opposite on the outside.

These two bolts appear to secure a heavy steel assembly, underneath which are the pads.

By studying these bolts, it appears that they just secure this assembly in place.

I assume therefore that if I remove these two bolts, this steel assembly can be lifted off, exposing the disks.

Before I proceed, can anyone confirm that I am on the right track ? If I remove this steel assembly, can I just pull the pads out and replace them as simply as that ?

Alternatively, is there a DIY guide for changing the discs ?

Thanks.

How annoying ! I have tried again, bith in Firefox and in Windows Explorer. I have even turned my firewall off temporarily. I just get "Cannot display webpage". I am going to try it on a different computer. Does it need Flash ? There must be some sort of security issue on my computer.

Thanks and I will be in touch.

Waiting with baited breath .....

Thanks. I opened it ok eventually. I tried in two computers and no luck. So then I disconnected my broadband and used another ISP on dial-up and it worked fine. So it must be my broadband ISP that was blocking access because the domain is .ru ! I will have to ask why. Could job I thought of that.

Anyway, now to study the drawings and I will compare them with the car.

Thanks and I will let you know later how I got on.;)

You can just push the piston back, but not good when a car gets to 10 years old as it can push back any bits into the expensive ABS pump,,better to clamp the pipe and undo the nipple. If the nipple looks to corroded then just push the pistons back.

I have now had another look and compared the drawing. It seems to be similar, I think, except for the following :

1. In the middle picture in the link, I do not recognise Part number 47 ??? What is this because it is confusing me ?

2. Part number 53 on my car is not 7mm hexagonal. It is a 13 mm hexagonal bolt (not an Allen). There is a larger bolt close to it which is 19 mm. Both of these are repeated lower down.

3. There are no rubber bungs in the bolts.

I have taken some photographs which are attached to this posting. The first shows the front of the caliper, and at the top left you can just see the head of the 13 mm bolt, where it goes into a tube with what looks like a rubber compressible sleeve.

The second photo shows the 13 mm bolt and the larger 19 mm bolt.

Am I correct that the 13 mm is the one I undo to remove the caliper ? Maybe they changed the design at some time from a 13 mm hexagonal bolt to a 7 mm Allen key ?

Thanks for your help. It really is appreciated. I thought it is best to be sure that I really understand what I am doing before I start !

OK yours is the one in the top picture,,I thought that there were 2 x 19mm bolts that hold the caliper to the stub axle.

What ever the caliper does have to be removed ,,re the bolts either new ones or some loctite on the threads
