Is it right that you should not be able to move gear level on an auto without having the brake pedal depressed? i am able to freely move the level on my 88 300SL without depressing the brake

You shouldnt be able to move it out of park until you press the brake pedal.

I'm not so sure. Certainly post 90's cars have this, but I don't remember such rules on the 80's 123's and S classes I used to drive, though to be fair, I always pressed the brake anyway so maybe I just didn't notice.

107s let you do what you want

they just won't let you start in anything other than P or N.
Useful for getting out of snow sand or mud in the "Driving" manual approved method of rocking between D and R. I shall test all three on my next trip to the frozen sand-pit during the monsoon.
