I am looking for some advice for changing the glow plugs on my 1998 E 300 TD to try and resolve my starting problems. Can someone guide me in the easiest and simplest way of doing this, and what parts have to be removed to gain access to the Glow Plugs.

Is there an online manual I could refer to? (I can perform basic maintenence tasks but nothing too technical. Should I attempt this?).

Thanks,

Mark

I cannot get to the glow plugs under the inlet manifold. Is it a nightmare to remove the manifold, and what else do I need to remove?

You need a selection of long 1/4 inch extensions, a socket to fit the conection nut , a deep socket to fit the glow plug and a universal swivel joint.

Remove the air box it has a 10mm nut @ each corner and you have to just find a way to get the socket, unijoint and extension onto the plug through the gaps in the inlet manifold. you get at no 1& 2 thru the gap behind no2 cylinder, once you get the hang of it it is quite easy. The wires are attached to their connection nuts so they won't fall off when you remove them from the plugs.
Its a bit of a faf about but can be done in an hour or so.
To check which plug is dead remove the wiring harness plug at the relay end and test at the glow plugs for continuity/resistance they should be less than an ohm or so if they are higher the plug is dud, you only need change the dud ones but do them all and you won't have any more trouble.

Do not attempt to force the plugs out using an ill fitted open end spanner thats not dead squre to the plugs you may snap it off and then its a cylinder head off job to sort it out.

I got my 1/4 socket stuff in a pound shop and it works beautifully.

good luck and good starting.

I strongly suggest you don't do glowplugs yourself. The risk of snapping them is high

it is tempting to have go yourself, but im going to let a garage do mine as i have heard what nick has said about them snapping and i dont fancy taking the head off. if i was to do it, id get the inlet manifold out of the way to get flush onto the plugs, good luck!!

Another question!!!!!

If the inlet manifold was to be removed, apart from the visable top bolts to the engine, where is it it attached on the under side, and is it easily removed?

Thanks again,
