Last time I changed my front pads I dismounted the whole carrier to also do the discs. Does the carrier remove without unbolting the whole thing?

when changing the pads it is only necessary to knock out the pins and push back the pistons. With ATE callipers they have to be unbolted with the 7mm allen key from the rear

It may be prudent to release the bleed nipple and drain the old fluid from the caliper rather than push it (and any filth) back into your ABS and master cylinder.
MB recomend annual brake fluid changes.

I thought it was every two years for the brake fluid change

Yes by far the best method, with the older cars it does stop any rubbish from going into the expensive ABS pump

Hi TV,

Mine are the top ones shown in the drawing (link above, item 5). I dismounted them using bolt no 150 (something like an 18mm socket), are we talking about the no. 134 allen headed bolt as being 7mm?

What happened is that I tried unsuccessfully to remove the discs a couple of months ago, so reassembled everything with new pads on the old discs. I have now replaced the discs

(I found it much easier to remove the hub - mask both openings to keep the bearings clean, then tap or belt the disk off on a solid piece of wood, you get plenty of space to swing a hammer & it's a hell of a lot easier than attempting to swing a hammer inside the wheel arch, you can also check the bearings and repack them with grease, simply remount them & then adjust the bearing)

What I now have is slightly worn pads on new discs which have a bit more bedding in to do (need to order some new ones, dress the old ones down and keep them as spares I think?)
