Hello

I have a feeling that my Charcoal Canister has never been replaced - visted my local MB dealer to which informed me that it does not need replacing, contray to Haynes. What are the implications if this is not replaced ? Can it make the car sluggish and lacking initial / pulling off performance ? Would the Lambda probe make any change ?

My is running not at all well with the following: very poor fuel consumption 15ish around town - Hesitates when pulls off but not when cold- tick over drops to around 500 RPM in traffic when very hot and hesitates - makes a slight air growling noise when pulling off regardless if hot or cold.

I have

Replaced the plugs with genuine MB , the HT leads OM part, distributor cap and rotor arm OM parts, all breather hoses and vacuum hose genuine MB, air filter OM part, fuel filter OM part and cleaned the air butterfly.

I do

Change the oil and filter every 6000 and stay on top of all the other fluid change intervals.

Car has covered 224,000 miles and is in mint condition.

Getting a bit discouraged now any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an air leak to me. Check ALL vacuum connections and the EGR and carbon cannister valves.
Plug the vacuum lines and see if there is any difference. Have a listen around for where the air hissing noise is coming from.

If fuel consumption is that bad the car must be overfuelling badly. Take it to an experienced specialist and have it checked over properly. If it's way too rich the emissions will be way out
