Hi all

1) Can a blocked/tired charcoal filter cause excessive fuel consumption (on a 190E)?

2) What is the function of the charcoal filter?

Thanks in anticipation of replies.

You mean the one on the nearside wheel arch .This is only fitted to cars with an evaporative emission system. This should be changed every 60-70 thousand miles. Sorry I thought you ment the cat. you never know what people call parts on this forum .

Yes they can lead to excessive fuel consumption....if it hasn't been changed for a long time, you may also find that the car can suffer from smelling heavily of petrol.

As Landover states they are used within the emissions system and they often get overlooked at service time.

Thanks Landover & mjtray for your replies.

I don't know if my charcoal filter has ever been changed, but a chance conversation raised the question in what passes for my mind.

My car uses what I think is quite a lot of petrol despite being in pretty good condition and passing its MOT OK on emmissions. I sometimes get quite a strong petrol smell from it but I can find no obvious leaks.
This is obviously a good thing to renew ASAP.

Is it a dealer only part or will people like GSF stock it?

I recon it will be a dealer part as not all 190's are fitted with them.As it is out of sight not many people know about it. .Not a major job to change.

Does a 1999 CLK 230K have a charcoal filter and if so where is it located?
