chasis number for indicator stalk?

little confused... i am visiting a garage on saturday to replace my c-180's indicator stalk... they asked me chasis number to order that part

is this normal?

The VIN number,,yes this is normal, for if the wrong part came in they would have to keep it on the shelf, so to avoid mistakes they ask for the VIN, and I have to ask that many times on here, so that the correct info can be given
