97 e420 check engine light, engine electronic on..dealership diagnosis major leak in purge system-code p0455..1)#8misfire, code p0308-2)misfire,twc damaging code p0300..what are causes? why does the gas cap cause check engine as several dealers know this being a possible cause??

Hi,
I can't tell you about the fault codes, though there are manuals (haynes) which you can buy and which list the codes and possible causes.

However, the fuel system on a modern car employs many devices to help reduce emissions, such as the carbon trap for fuel vapour (purge system). For these to operate properly,  the fuel system, including the tank, must be sealed. Hence, if the cap is not on properly, you get the warning lights.
