I am about to purchase a second hand Star Diagnostics System
it has the following set of cables,OBDII cable, 38pin cable, 4 pin cable and, Vito/Sprinter cable

The seller says:
"The unit uses DAS Aug/2007 (english) software. It can be updated with the dealer DAS DVD
This system works well and has had very little use"

I would very much appreicate if anyone can tell me what checks can I do, to check the machine is 100% legit and working.....

I think this is a Compact 2 system..and I don't know how it compares to a Compact 3.

I have attached pictures

On the net, its the only way that you will know, genuine versions cost £110 a month to update

That unit Pictured is called a star basic, and like the title is a basic version of the star machine. the compact star machine look totally different to these units.

There was a firm selling the X431 for £725 loaded with MB and BMW plus all of the normal cars at the trade show last week

They are sold. We've just bought one from Mercedes themselves.

Many of these have MUX's that are locked out and no longer work. Be very careful when buying...........

As someone says above, that picture is a "Star Diagnosis Basic" - current machines are the Basic 2 and the Compact 3, which run Windows XP not Windows NT and are faster as they are newer generation.

Also, that particular Basic 1 picture has appeared zillions of times on eBay private auctions, and I suspect it doesnt exist.

Ask to be sent
a) a picture with the unit with his ebay id on a piece of paper on the unit
b) The Star system number from the back of it - without wanting to reveal the serial number scheme, PM me with it and I will tell you if it could be real (but not if it is)

You can buy new if you are in Europe, but you have to sign a 3 year subscription agreement, pay up-front, and be VAT registered, and an independant workshop. If you are very big they will lease.

You can not SCN code cars (and that means clusters, and engine management on all new models after the W169-A and W164-ML came along) on newer cars without a genuine machine as you can't get a login on the SCN coding server. More and more of the cars are becoming SCN coded.

I've been told that each new release of DAS has more and more stuff to trap non genuine machines. Someone told me that Compact 2 is not installable anymore, and it checks for serial numbers of muxes and hardware configuration. I've heard a couple of people whinging on other forums that this is true, and old muxes have been disabled.

Be *very* careful.

We have MB star to April 06 loaded into Compact 3, it was purchased from europe. At the time we signed to a 12month contract. Since then the contract has expired, we have obtained the fix from eastern europe, to load the update to early 06.

Some of the functions do not work, also rpalmedia is correct about SCN code cars.
