Now, i'm not 100% on even believing this but i thought i'd try and start a discussion about it here to see what people know.

as you do at work the other day we were talking about cars and it came up in conversation that somebody thought all new Mercs were made from metal scavenged from chernobyl and would not be around as much as their older counterparts.

this is all i can remember. is there any truth in this or is it absolute rhubarb?

It's perfectly true and the cars stay warmer than others because of the radiation.

It's called SnowMeltronic.

Of course this argument applies to anything made from post 1945 steel.
The only steel they have access to to make things (eg sensistive medical equipment) out of non radioactive steel is at the bottom of the oceans as shipwrecks! And there's getting less and less of it as it rots away.

rhubarb is highly corrosive in its self, when I saw what it did to a stainless steel pot,I would not go near the stuff, so are MBs made of rhubarb steel

This is true. The radiation in the steel had died down to safe levels by the mid-90's, and MB bought a job lot in the belief that the radiation that remained would be enough to stop the oxidisation process (rust) and thus would not have to prime/ galvinise the panels.

Worked out well

They ran out of this stuff in circa 2003.

Lancia had much the same idea, unfortunately ahead of its time and before the Chernobyl incident had actually occured, nice try though.

enjoying the witty quips, i thought this sort of subject matter would be enough to provoke silly answers. quality entertainment.

but i cant work out if this above is serious or sarcastic... damn text for the poor ability for sarcasm detection!

to be honest, i thought it was a bit of a silly thing, but it sounds a bit plausible...?

i think its funny that everybody went on about chernobyl being uninhabited and the exclusion zone being very dangerous etc for thousands of years.... and already you can go visit the exclusion zone on a tourist trip with the ukranians. Cool. wouldnt mind consireing it, they reckon now that its safe to go look at the place.... but i'm not 100% sure. .

So - you actually TRUST the Russians and what they tell you, do you?? Off you go then and enjoy the trip. You will only have yourself to blame when you set off the security scanners at every Airport for as long as you live

Trust no-one. Believe nothing. Check everything.

I'd guess at sarcastic. There is nothing anti corrosive about radiation and irradiating anyone who drove more than 30k per year would probably not be the greatest PR move for MB ;-).
(unless you subscribe to the idea that the less salesmen in the world the better).

All that said, maybe it was an idea to save on the cost of the ambient interior lighting system. A little radiation and you'd get a nice glow on the dash without the need for background LEDs

you've got me started now ....

i never mentioned anything about trust. it depends on which side you believe really but in all honesty i'm a lot more likely to not go. ever... it just intrigues me. its a good angle.

after all, i do have S.T.A.L.K.E.R and COD4 on my PC so technically no need to go!

aparrently it was leaked from someone who works at Mercedes, and they are worried about it sinking MB in europe..?

vicious rumours methinks. but entertaining nonetheless!
