Hi

I have a chip on my windscreen that is slightly smaller than a 5p coin, will the insurance company replace it or do they only replace when it is shattered?

Thanks

they may fix it with no charge to yourself. You caould always give it a gentle tap with a hammer.

They can do amazing things with repairs these days and with screens being bonded, its often better not replacing. The Auto windscreens folk will decide the best course and your ins co will pay whatever. Normally there is no excess for repairs whereas there is for a new screen.

.....Alternatively it looks a good match so just glue the 5p over the hole.

I would get it repaired, I have a small chip in mine which is being repaired next week. I would much rather have a repair than a new screen. As per above repairs are generally free with comp insurance however replacements are £50 plus. I had a new rear screen under warranty and they scratched the paintwork in the bottom corner of the rear screen and there was loads of the old sealant on the parcel shelf and rear seats. The MB service manager cleaned it out for me however I wouldn't want a replacement unless it was cracked.
With the front screen you need to get the wiper sensor calibrated and make sure the light sensor still works.

Agreed. Get it repaired. Your insurors probably have a deal with one of the glass providers - have a look at the bumph you got with your policy & docs. They will come to you to repair it, at home or at work - you choose.

With the original windscreen you can read your VIN number from outside the car through a small aperture in the bottom corner in front of the passenger, which is convenient. You can't do that with a replacement.

Once repaired you will be hard pressed to spot where it was. ;)

Have had windscreens repaired three times in the past and each time the crack reappeared within a couple of months. If the car is reasonably old then the visibility improvement of a new screen with no scratches and chips is a godsend on a wet winters night!.

Hitting it with a hammer is not a good idea, you could break a nail..

I have to disagree.

The windscreen on the ML was replaced - all the apertures were there and they all aligned perfectly.

Personally, I would have a new one. If you go to a good local fitter you'll find that they can absorb the excess somewhere and do a great job. If anybody needs a recommendation in the Norwich area, pm me
