chrome grille/gold roof trim

I bought a burgundyish mercedes 190E 1992 a few months ago and it has the traditional chrome grill and emblem on the bonnet, but a gold metal trim round the roof. Would this be the original design as it is slightly unusual?
Also I just noticed that the lower panels are slightly different colour (slightly browner)to the upper panels. Were there any two-tone cars made or would these be resprays, do you think?

Cheers

Phil

The 190..from memory.. did have a two tone paint scheme..the lower mouldings were plastic and finished in a semi matt finish which tended to blend with but not entirely match the paintwork on the upper panels, as for the gold tone roof trim...are you talking about the screen mouldings..I do remember these were normally burnished black or grey so gold is possible..

Thanks, yes l noticed a similar model to mine with the two tone panels this morning. It just seemed a bit chavvy for a merc.

The gold strip goes from the bottom of the front windscreen on the left and right, up and along the edge of the roof and round the back of the roof. The strip is about 8cm wide

I think that you will find that the gold was silver and its aged and now discoloured.

As Xtractorfan the bottom half plastic panels were semi matt that toned in with the upper colour

It looks like quite a smart 190 that you have there.

What I've always wondered is who thought that the asymmetrical wing mirrors looked good?

I have managed to have a look at a 190E since and your gold roof rails were indeed at one stage black/dark grey but the finish has worn and tarnished and the etch primer which originally was a buff colour is showing thru creating the gold look,, its a very common occurance with painted mouldings..
