I have seen chrome wheel arch trims for sale on ebay at £56 per set of four and was wondering....are these 'clip on' items 'officially' accepted by the MB fraternity and are they likely to cause a rust problem in this particularly vulnerable area at some time in the future? Would be grateful for constructive remarks. Ta

IMO they are used to hide rusty wheel arches and don't really fit the car.

From bodyshop experience dirt and moisture can get under them yes, and cause corrosion after a long periods of time. As for being accepted by fraternity, its all down to personal taste I imagine

mine don't hide rusty wheelarches

or they didn't when I bought them. They should be a lot cheaper from ECP, I think I paid about £36 quid for the set.

It's just a matter of personal taste, some like them, some don't.

Yes, pretty bad taste.

helen, I've never hidden my chromist tendencies

I can't forget saturday afternoons and a tube of Solvol Autosol, giving my VW's chrome a good going over. I miss it on these modern cars. Good job there's lots on the SL.

I took my chrome wheel arches off my old E300 to put on my newer E 220, because i love them, they look great and i personally think they protect the car especially when fitted over vasseline which lasts up to three years, after which you can take them off, clean them down...more vasseline and away you go ....practical point.....it is easier to replace 50 quid chromes than fork out for expensive paint jobs....wheel arches are a constant pain...and always go first.....so dont be so down on them !

My old W202 was fitted with these along with chrome door shells and a set of nice alloys, made it look very smart - see pic. stands out from the mundane, so if you like them - go for it!;)
