I'm doing up a 190E (not that I know what the E stands for - Parkers said it was fuel injection but it has a carburettor).

Having ansgt now after cheating with some rust on wheel arches by using German aftermarket wheel arch trims - chrome on stainless steel:

chromeclose24.JPG

They have a thin rubber strip at the top. My nephew said they look odd as the rest of the car line is black. Others say they really set the car off. Are they tacky or not these things?!!!!

Mercedes never made wheel arch trims I'm told by the dealer.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder...but as you asked, they look dead tacky IMHO.

They were acceptable in the 80's (just) as they were a 70's in thing, these days they are frowned upon, but look better than rust

Hi mate, I have the "tacky" trims fitted, they were on when i got her, i have removed them to check and not a spot of rust underneath, so a good wayoyl and back on, i think they look spot on with the chrome grille and the chrome boot trim, not everyones taste, but i like them! Its a good job were not all the same?
IMHO i think cars were better when we had chrome bumpers and the like! much more character. Regards Geoff.

Well thanks chaps. They're actually fitted using screws so maybe they're a bit screwy but I don't mind the retro look if they were a 70's thing.

I agree with chrome bumper thing. Looking around for chrome aerial to make the schema red, black and chrome as the merc radiators are nice in chrome.

The average person that sees your car is not an MB nut perfectionist, so enjoy the trims

Well thanks Malcolm. Are your valve caps chrome? I can see myself looking around for chrome wheels then feel let down by the black bumpers...

Some previous Mercs have a chrome body trim along the top sides of the cladding and continued on the top of the front and rear bumper as per my W124 coupe.

There is none fitted to the wheel arches however, and so the chrome line in effect has gaps which previous generation Mercs did not, which was continued over the wheel arches.

So on my type of car the aftermarket chrome arches merely fill the gap that exists.

However on yours there is no chrome that I can see to start with, only the aftermarket trims over the arches.

Would a better solution be to prep and spray them body colour.

Thanks David. That's a good idea.

I was thinking this morning of putting more aftermarket chrome trim on if decent quality, door handles, indicator light surrounds etc. It would take it away from the Merc 190 styling but whilst part of me is a purist, part of me feels the 190 styling is not as 'complete' as other models.

I think a lot of people like them and have them. If you do, enjoy them on your car.

Personally, I wouldn't be seen dead with them on my car  , not that they would stick anyway - there's too much rust.

Actually my valve caps are plated brass, and Helen has become scornful now that she has a blister:roll:

Chrome wheel arches on your merc I'd say are ok since they are covering the rust... but on newer MBs I'd say anyone that sticks them on needs their head examined. You see a lot of this thing in the states and other countries, I also saw some chrome wing mirror surround things on ebay for the w203...I cannot believe that people pay for rubbish like this...why spoil a nice thing? These wing mirror surrounds are really hillarious I urge you all to have a look if you want a laugh... They look like they have been fashioned out of kitchen foil.

Thanks all again.

The chrome issue seems nothing now compared to the deep problems I'm now having with the sill colour - look the liberty of starting another thread.

I would say it all depends on the body colour, a metallic grey with chromed wheelarches can look very classy.

On a red, black or green car: I am sceptical!

My 300TE (W124) metallic grey was a stunner with it.

I would never put them on my W210 (titanite red)
